About John

John has over 24 years of senior management experience working at the intersection of the hospital/physician relationship. He has led interim management turnaround engagements for a number of large, institutionally sponsored medical groups, facilitating annual savings from $2 million to $20 million. In addition, he has led engagements focused on strategic planning and restructuring of the employed physician enterprise, physician compensation model design and implementation, practice acquisition, and alternative models of physician alignment.

John holds a bachelor’s degree in political science and a master’s degree in public administration with distinction from The American University in Washington, DC. He has been a featured speaker for a number of professional organizations including the Medical Group Management Association, the American Hospital Association, and the American Association of Medical Colleges. In 2007, John founded a national conference for health system C-level executives focused on hospital and physician alignment.

Prior to founding Southwind (now Advisory Board Consulting), John served as vice president of operations for a national physician practice management company. In this role, John oversaw the operation, management, and growth of over 15 medical groups across the United States, ranging from 21 to 120 physicians.

In the 1980s, John served in executive positions in the academic medical center arena, where he led the creation of a medical center sponsored HMO and managed a large, faculty practice plan that improved financial performance by $26 million.

John began his health care career with VHA Enterprises Consulting Services in Las Colinas, Texas. There he worked on the development of provider sponsored HMOs, PPOs, and physician/hospital organizations.
