Experience & Background
Dr. Veena Lanka is a research partner at the Advisory Board. She is a physician with over 12 years of health care experience that includes clinical practice, academic research, healthcare consulting and new product development.
As a research partner she works with the Advisory Board’s largest research clients, advising C-suite leaders and Board members on strategic issues affecting healthcare systems. In addition to leading our research on Care Variation Reduction, she provides ongoing guidance to large health system partners on key trends and themes in healthcare industry and partners closely in setting their multi-year strategy, reducing clinical costs, launching new programs and services and establishing right-sized clinical governance models.
Her topics of expertise include designing high-reliability programs, centralizing and scaling clinical standardization, reducing unwarranted utilization, population health, securing physician alignment and supporting broad change management initiatives. She is passionate about helping health systems advance their mission, align their frontline clinicians with key system priorities and achieve better care for all patients walking through their doors.
During her tenure in the Technology and Consulting division, Dr. Lanka advised clinical and business leaders on successful implementation, rollout and adoption of clinical technologies. In this capacity she diagnosed performance issues and provided data-driven guidance to improve frontline clinical outcomes, care coordination and network integrity. She has launched value delivery services for new technologies applying real-time algorithms to some of the biggest patient care challenges such as sepsis mortality, CHF readmissions, palliative care eligibility, medication reconciliation etc.
She has also led large teams of delivery consultants, educators and cohort services teams for multiple Crimson technology solutions including Crimson Population Risk Management, Crimson Care Management, Crimson Medical Referrals and Crimson Clinical Advantage.
Prior to joining the firm, Dr. Lanka managed multi-national clinical trials for neurological diseases at Massachusetts General Hospital and published peer-reviewed articles on ALS. Prior to academia, she gained extensive experience in health care program planning, design, and evaluation for population health initiatives in ambulatory and community settings. This was central to her work in consulting for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to rebuild the childhood lead poisoning prevention program in New Orleans post-Katrina and in designing a primary school health program composed of health services and health curriculum for international non-profit organization India School Fund. While working for the World Health Organization, Dr. Lanka evaluated and redesigned community health programs for infectious disease patients in rural India, evaluated compliance failure with disease regimens, and established protocols for newborn care. Prior to her work in public health, she practiced emergency medicine in India.
Dr. Lanka earned a master’s in public health from Harvard University in Boston with a focus on global health and applied research methods. She earned her bachelor’s in medicine and surgery from Christian Medical College in India. She is passionate about supporting women in leadership, promoting diversity and mentoring junior employees in the workplace.
