What topics does Advisory Board cover?

Our research bridges the gap between where healthcare leaders are today and where they want to be tomorrow. We work hard to identify insights, strategies, and tools that help move healthcare forward. We can help you:

  • Develop and assess your strategy.
  • Identify tactics and tools to translate strategy into action.
  • Make your teams more effective.

Sample topics we cover include:

  • Clinical quality
  • Digital health
  • Strategic planning
  • Workforce engagement and retention

Are there topics Advisory Board does not currently cover?

While we love helping you, there are a few areas where we won’t be the best resource. These include:

  • Competitive intelligence, vendor, or product recommendations
    • Our stance as a neutral third party means you can be sure our research is objective. To maintain that objectivity, we don’t provide competitor information and/or advice on vendor selection. We can help assess criteria for vendor selection and will spotlight innovative companies and technologies, but do not advise on specific vendors.
  • Clinical procedures guidance or legal advice
    • Though we have many experts on staff, including physicians and nurses, we do not provide clinical or legal advice. This is best handled by your clinicians or legal counsel.
  • Accreditation or certification programs
    • While we have profiled institutions with certain accreditations, assist in improving Star ratings, and offer broad guidance on achieving certain statuses (like Magnet status), we do not offer individualized consulting on how to obtain accreditation.

How can I get started with your research?

Connect with an AskAdvisory expert by clicking the "Chat with us" button in the bottom-right corner of any page on advisory.com, and then click "Contact AskAdvisory" in the pop-up window. Under the "I have a question about" drop-down, select "Research." The most common support requested is "an email answer to a healthcare question," however, you can also request to speak with an expert directly, have a tool walkthrough, or receive help with a data analytics question.

Then, follow the prompts to tell us how we can help and click "Submit."

Tools & analytics

What data tools and analytics does Advisory Board offer?

Advisory Board’s data and tools are designed to help healthcare leaders make confident, strategic decisions based on data about their facility and their market. Our suite of tools supports a range of needs — from long-term market growth planning to detailed operational benchmarking — built on robust national datasets, rigorously maintained methodologies, and intuitive user interfaces. Check your membership to see which data and analytics tools your organization has access to.

Each tool has a dedicated landing page that provides a high-level overview of the tool’s purpose, methodology, and how to use the tool.

What are some of the most common questions the tools help answer?

Organizations commonly use Advisory Board tools to answer questions such as:

  • Where should we invest to support future growth?
  • Which service lines are expected to grow or decline?
  • How does our market share compare to competitors?
  • Where are we experiencing variation in cost or length of stay?
  • How do post-acute referral patterns impact outcomes and spending?

Many members pair these tools with Advisory Board strategic planning resources to translate insights into concrete business decisions.

How do I access and navigate Advisory Board’s analytics and data tools?

From any page on advisory.com, select "Tools" → "See all tools" in the main navigation to reach the central tools hub. This page provides an overview of all available tools and organizes them by primary use case, such as forecasting, performance & benchmarking, and post-acute care. Members may also access tools directly through links embedded in related research, tool spotlights, or AskAdvisory responses.

Each tool has a dedicated tool landing page that provides a high-level overview of the tool’s purpose, intended use cases, and the types of questions it is designed to answer. Within active tools, users can access tool-specific FAQs and walk-throughs.

What data sources are used across the tools, and how frequently is the data refreshed?

Common sources include CMS Standard Analytical Files (Traditional Medicare inpatient, hospital outpatient, SNF, home health, hospice claims), Applied Geographic Solutions (demographics and consumer attributes), LexisNexis clinician rosters (specialty assignment), LexisNexis claims data sourced from Medicare and claims clearinghouses, CDC USCS and NCI SEER (cancer incidence), and Hospital Compare plus Medicare Cost Reports (quality and volume and inputs).

In terms of how frequently the data is refreshed, cadence varies by tool. Many Medicare claims tools refresh quarterly (aligned to CMS releases). Forecasting tools refresh annually to coincide with demographic model updates and source data availability.

Why do many tools rely on traditional Medicare data?

Traditional Medicare offers comprehensive national coverage and consistent coding for facility-based services. While it represents only part of a hospital’s total population, it reliably indicates patterns in cost, length of stay, utilization, and care variation — and many findings generalize directionally across payers.

How does Advisory Board ensure fair comparisons across markets or facilities?

Tools align on service-line/MS-DRG/Outpatient Grouping definitions, apply risk adjustment where applicable (e.g., demographics, HCC), and use clear geographic attribution rules (e.g., patient origin vs. provider location) to support apples-to-apples benchmarking. See individual tool FAQs for more details.

How can I get more information about the categories of tools?

We’ve organized our tools into three different categories:

  • Forecasting and demand
  • Performance and benchmarking
  • Post-acute care and network design

Which tools focus on forecasting and demand?

Which tools focus on performance and benchmarking?

Which tools focus on post-acute care and network design?

How do Advisory Board tools structure their reports or dashboards?

Most of our tools combine measures, charts, and exportable tables with filters for geography, service lines, time frame, and provider attributes to enable quick scanning and deep dives.

How do I build or modify my market definitions?

Create service area definitions based on zip codes, counties, state, or radius. Users can also share market definitions with colleagues in Market Manager. Tools based on traditional Medicare claims data are limited to a county view; we automatically convert zip code-based markets into county definitions for those tools.

How does Advisory Board define its service lines?

For inpatient analyses, Advisory Board uses MS-DRG codes rolled into clinically meaningful service lines. Download the full inpatient service line grouper here. For outpatient analyses, Advisory Board uses a proprietary Outpatient Procedure Group (OPG) methodology to roll CPT codes into service lines.

These service-line definitions are applied consistently across tools. For outpatient definitions, members may contact their Advisory Board representative or AskAdvisory.

Note: We can share outpatient definitions only with members who have created an advisory.com account.

How can I export, share, or cite results?

Export options typically include Excel/CSV/PDF. When sharing externally, attribute analyses to Advisory Board and cite the underlying data source (e.g., CMS Standard Analytical File).

Why might results from Advisory Board tools differ from my organization’s internal data?

Differences usually arise from variation in data sources. Some tools, like our Market Scenario Planner, are built on modeled data which extrapolate use rates onto the entire population to model all-payer claims. Modeled data will differ from actual historical claims data. Other tools, like our Medicare Market Explorer, are based on traditional Medicare beneficiary claims and will not match data from all-payer datasets.

Why are some providers, facilities, or clinicians missing?

Common reasons include NPIs not appearing on claims, facility absence from the selected market, low-volume combinations, or lack of traditional Medicare encounters during the selected period.

Where can I find tool-specific FAQs?

Tool-specific FAQs are available directly within each active tool. To access them, select the question mark (?) icon or the "Resources" drop-down in the top-right corner of the tool interface.

Who can I contact for help with a tool?

Email ask@advisory.com or contact your Advisory Board representative.

Advanced email troubleshooting tips

Your organization may have unusually strict IT settings which block our emails from ever getting to your inbox or blocking your ability to access the advisory.com website. Please provide your IT department with the following information below to help them remedy the issue.

Email troubleshooting:
Our IP addresses periodically change, so your best bet is to add the following domains to a safe senders list.

  • @advisory.com
  • @News.advisory.com
  • @Events.advisory.com
  • @Service.advisory.com
  • @Emails.advisory.com

Advisory Board email communications for newsletters and marketing comes from the following IP address and can be from one of three sub-domains. We recommend that IT departments add the IP address and sub-domains to the allow list area of their email protection systems. Furthermore, individuals may need to also create these exceptions at their individual inbox level depending on their company's email policies.

  • IP: 192.28.144.214
  • Email sending domains:
    • News.advisory.com
    • Events.advisory.com
    • Service.advisory.com

Advisory Board uses the host Salesforce to send advisory.com account emails. These include things like password resets and account creation emails. Salesforce sends these emails from two IP addresses:

  • 204.19.15.140
  • 207.200.50.160

Advisory Board sends account creation and password reset emails through the sub-domain Emails.advisory.com. There is no associated IP address.

Please contact us if you have any other questions or if you need to discuss further.

Advisory.com access troubleshooting:
A user may be unable to access advisory.com due to certain network security measures, such as VPN settings or security protocols, which could misidentify links to advisory.com in our emails as a potential security threat. To remedy this situation, organizations should first add our domain to their network's safe senders or safe access list. By doing so, their security system will recognize Advisory Board's domain as a trusted source, allowing the redirection process to proceed without being blocked. If this adjustment does not resolve the issue, further investigation by an IT team into the network settings and configurations may be necessary.

I've forgotten my password. How do I reset it?

  1. Go to the "Reset Your Password" page.
  2. Enter the email associated with your account and click "Continue."
  3. You will be sent an email with instructions to reset your password.
  4. A "Reset Password Request Received" message will appear, confirming that you have been sent an email.
  5. Click the link in the email to reset your password.

To change your password:

  1. Go to the "Change Password" page.
  2. Fill out the "Password" and "Confirm Password" fields and click "Change Password."

How do I search advisory.com?

Here are a few tips to help you get better search results:

  • Check your spelling.
  • Try synonyms, like "physician" instead of "doctor."
  • Use generic terms, like "bandages" instead of "Band-Aids."
  • The search functionality is not case-sensitive. For example, "medical center" and "Medical Center" will return the same results.
  • You can use special characters (such as :, #, &, @) but use them sparingly. They may pull information with technical code.

Look for an exact match

If you search for physician fee schedule, the results will return anything with the words physician, fee, or schedule.

If you search for “physician fee schedule” with quotes, you will get you far fewer and more precise results because it looks for those words in that exact order.

Advanced search

Our advanced search lets you filter by date, topic, industry sector, and content type (such as case study or quick guide). For example, if you know you’re looking only for oncology case studies produced in the last two years, you can do that with our filters.

Which browsers are compatible with advisory.com?

We try to make advisory.com compatible with modern and legacy browsers. But the companies that design web browsers have a lot of control over the ever-changing landscape of the internet. We can't guarantee everything we've produced will be supported by every browser, forever.

The most recent versions of the following browsers work best on advisory.com:

  • Google Chrome
  • Mozilla Firefox
  • Apple Safari for Macs
  • iOS Safari for iPhones and iPads
  • Microsoft Edge

What about Internet Explorer?

Microsoft stopped supporting Internet Explorer and encourages everyone else to do the same. The company recommends Microsoft Edge as a replacement.
