Around the nation: Pfizer's Covid-19 vaccine is the highest-selling pharmaceutical product in history

Pfizer reported $36.8 billion in sales during 2021 for its Covid-19 vaccine, marking the highest sales of any pharmaceutical product in a single year, in today's bite-sized hospital and health industry news from the District of Columbia, Florida, and New York.

  • District of Columbia: HHS on Tuesday announced that it would allocate $66.5 million in American Rescue Plan funding to bolster Covid-19 vaccination outreach efforts across 38 states and the District of Columbia. In total, HHS has given almost $390 million to 158 organizations as part of its Community-Based Workforce for Covid-19 Vaccine Program, which supports initiatives to increase Covid-19 vaccinations. "Building vaccine confidence is critical to increasing vaccinations, which remains so important as we encourage boosters and kids' vaccinations," said HHS secretary Xavier Becerra. "This funding will help even more community-based organizations build confidence in the Covid-19 vaccine among people in their community who may not have been vaccinated yet." (Carbajal, Becker's Hospital Review, 2/9)
  • Florida: HCA Healthcare's North Florida division on Wednesday announced that Brian Nunn had been appointed CEO of Putnam Community Medical Center, effective March 14. Nunn, who has over 30 years of experience in the health care industry, most recently served as CEO of Encompass Health rehabilitation center. "I look forward to working with the team as we continue to adapt to the changing health care needs of our communities and continue our mission-driven approach to health care delivery. Above all else, we are committed to the care and improvement of human life," Nunn said. (Gonzalez, Becker's Hospital Review, 2/9)
  • New York: Pfizer on Tuesday reported $36.8 billion in sales during 2021 for its Covid-19 vaccine—the highest reported sales of any pharmaceutical product in a single year. In 2021, Pfizer made $7.8 billion in U.S. Covid-19 vaccine sales and $29 billion in international sales. According to Endpoints News, Pfizer controls around 70% of the Covid-19 vaccine market in the United States and Europe. After Pfizer, the second-highest sales also occurred in 2021, with AbbVie reporting $20.7 billion in sales for Humira, a drug used to treat rheumatoid arthritis.
