Cancer Patient Urgent Care Pro Forma

Use this pro forma to evaluate the best model for providing cancer patients with urgent symptom support based on your program's priorities.

Throughout the course of treatment, many cancer patients experience severe side effects requiring immediate attention. To receive urgent care, patients often end up in the emergency department, which has negative consequences on cost, quality, and patient satisfaction.

To prevent patients from visiting the ED, many cancer programs have invested in nurse-led phone triage. But once patients report their symptoms, programs need to care for them in the most appropriate setting—ideally, on an outpatient basis.

To help you evaluate the best model for providing urgent symptom support given your program’s priorities, we’ve developed the Cancer Patient Urgent Care Pro Forma, which lets you compare capacity, revenue, and cost savings for three options:

  1. Flexible scheduling, in which oncologists and/or advanced practitioners block a set amount of time in their schedules to see urgent add-on patients rather than scheduled patients
  2. Dedicated provider, in which an oncologist and/or advanced practitioner is dedicated at least part-time to treating patients with urgent needs
  3. Urgent care center, in which organizations invest in dedicated space and providers to treat patients with urgent needs
