Toolkit for Successfully Implementing Imaging Clinical Decision Support

Clinical decision support, or CDS, is an IT tool that embeds clinical guidelines to help providers select the most appropriate imaging exams for patients at the point of order entry. CDS has been getting well-deserved attention since Congress passed legislation requiring providers to use CDS for Medicare patients by 2017 or face financial consequences.

CMS postponed certain aspects of the program—including the 2017 provider implementation deadline—in November. However, the benefits of imaging CDS go far beyond meeting a Medicare mandate. When executed properly, CDS can ensure appropriate use of imaging and improve performance on patient access and total cost of care.

To help imaging leaders thoughtfully and effectively implement CDS, we created a comprehensive set of tools that map to the tactics laid out in our study, Playbook for Implementing Clinical Decision Support.
