Around the nation: Trump says annual physical went 'PERFECTLY'

President Donald Trump recently underwent an annual medical and dental exam, reporting that "[e]verything checked out PERFECTLY," in today's bite-sized hospital and health industry news from the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Oregon.

  • District of Columbia: On Tuesday, President Donald Trump received an annual medical and dental exam at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. According to the White House, the exam was a "routine" assessment that is part of Trump's "regular preventive healthcare." After the exam, Trump posted on Truth Social that "[e]verything checked out PERFECTLY." According to the Associated Press/STAT, this is Trump's fourth publicly disclosed medical exam since he returned to office. Trump, who turns 80 next month, is the oldest person to be elected U.S. president, and there have been growing concerns about his age and its impact on his cognitive abilities and physical health. Previously, Trump was diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency, a condition that causes blood to pool in the veins and is common in older adults. • Maryland: The Maryland Prescription Drug Affordability Board has agreed to set a price cap for Ozempic, a GLP-1 drug approved for diabetes. The price for Ozempic will be capped at $274 for a $30-day supply by January 2027, a change that the board estimates will save $5.8 million a year. According to Andrew York, executive director of the Maryland board, the expected cost was benchmarked against the maximum fair price paid by Medicare for the drug. In 2028, the board expects to set upper limits on other high-cost drugs purchased by state residents in the commercial insurance market as well. "We are excited that the board will be moving forward soon to bring down the costs of expensive drugs purchased by all Marylanders," said Vincent DeMarco, head of the Maryland Health Care for All coalition. "Their work will ensure more of our residents can afford the drugs they need to stay healthy. Drugs don’t work if people can’t afford them." (Silverman, STAT+ [subscription required], 5/18)
  • Oregon: The Oregon Health Authority's Health Care Market Oversight program has approved a new joint venture between Compassus and Providence. Under the deal, Compassus will acquire a 50% stake in Providence's home health and hospice operations in the state. In return, Compassus is required to invest $30 million in the operations over five years and must continue community benefit programs established by Providence. The joint venture includes approximately 40 home health and hospice locations across five states, including 11 in Oregon. Alaska, Washington, Texas, and California all approved the Compassus-Providence deal last year. According to Providence, the Oregon deal is expected to close this fall.
