Around the nation: Amazon's One Medical launches new AI chatbot

Amazon has launched a new health-focused AI chatbot for members of its One Medical primary care chain, in today's bite-sized hospital and health industry news from Arkansas, Maryland, and Washington.

  • Arkansas: Walmart is planning to open four clinical research sites at its former healthcare centers this spring. According to Becker's Health IT, the Walmart Healthcare Research Institute is collaborating with clinical research company Care Access to launch new research sites at three former Walmart Health locations and a rural Walmart store. The sites will offer patients screenings and allow them to access potential research opportunities. "As healthcare evolves, it is becoming clear that meaningful progress happens when care starts closer to home," said Walmart CMO Emily Aaronson. "The future of health will not be built only in large academic medical centers. It will also be shaped in neighborhoods, towns and rural communities, in places people already trust and rely on everyday." (Bruce, Becker's Health IT, 1/22; Japsen, Forbes, 1/22)
  • Maryland: FDA has granted clearance to a new AI-powered tool called CARE from Aidoc that can detect 14 acute conditions from CT scans. The tool includes 11 newly cleared indications, as well as three previously cleared ones, in one workflow. According to Aidoc, CARE is designed to improve patient flow by identifying critical findings earlier amid imaging backlogs and ED crowding. In testing reviewed by FDA, CARE correctly identified urgent conditions in almost all cases and had significantly fewer false alarms compared to older, single-use AI tools. So far, the tool has analyzed over 100 million patient cases. "Health systems are increasingly looking to AI to improve access and tackle their most pressing priorities," said Elad Walach, CEO and cofounder of Aidoc. "With CARE, we knew breadth alone wasn't enough. We were committed to meeting the safety and quality threshold required for real-world clinical use. This FDA clearance, combining unprecedented breadth and accuracy, marks a new era for clinical AI, and we're excited to partner with physicians to improve patient care worldwide." • Washington: Amazon has launched a new health-focused AI chatbot for its One Medical members. The chatbot uses information from members' medical records to answer health questions and provide guidance about symptoms or potential treatments. Members can also use the chatbot to book appointments, decide between care settings, and renew their prescriptions. According to Amazon, the chatbot includes "multiple patient safety guardrails" to connect patients with providers when needed, as well as strict privacy features, such as encryption and controls over who can access medical records. "The U.S. health care experience is fragmented, with each provider seeing only parts of your health puzzle," said Neil Lindsay, SVP of Amazon Health Services. "Health AI in the One Medical app brings together all the pieces of your personal health information to give you a more complete picture— helping you understand your health, and supporting you in getting the care you need to get and stay well."
