Around the nation: CDC panel recommends hepatitis B vaccine for adults under 60

A CDC panel voted unanimously to recommend the hepatitis B vaccine for all American adults under the age of 60, in today's bite-sized hospital and health industry news from California, Georgia, and New York.

  • California: Orange County Superior Court Judge Peter Wilson on Nov. 1 ruled against the city of Oakland, as well as Santa Clara, Los Angeles, and Orange counties in a $50 billion lawsuit filed against Purdue Pharma, Johnson & Johnson, Teva Pharmaceutical Industries, Endo International, and Allergan over the marketing of opioid pain medications. Wilson ruled that the pharmaceutical companies could not be held liable for opioid deaths in those areas of the state because their marketing campaigns did not cause an increase in opioid prescriptions and the medications were approved by the state and federal governments. (Axios, 11/2; Silverman, STAT+ [subscription required], 11/1)
  • Georgia: CDC's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices on Wednesday issued a recommendation advising all adults under 60 to get the hepatitis B vaccine. The committee selected the age cap of 59 based on the previous hepatitis B vaccine recommendation for people with diabetes. While it’s unclear when CDC director Rochelle Walensky plans to approve the recommendation, she will need to sign off on it before it can become public policy. • New York: Mount Sinai Health System and BronxCare Health System on Thursday opened the BronxCare Mount Sinai Comprehensive Cancer Care—a new 10,000-square-foot facility with 20 chemotherapy bays, a specialized oncology pharmacy, and advanced radiation oncology care. Kevin Jain, section chief of medical oncology and hematology at BronxCare, has been selected to direct the new center. Jain is joined by a medical staff that includes medical oncologists and hematologists, general surgeons, and radiation oncologists. (Carbajal, Becker's Hospital Review, 11/4)
