Emerging Idea

Clear Bagging for Provider-Administered Specialty Medications

15 Minute Read

Health systems are looking for ways to address the growing impact of payer policies on infusion services. One particularly challenging policy for infusion centers is when payers require providers to source medications from a specialty pharmacy (a process called “white bagging”) instead of through the hospital’s typical distributors.

Clear bagging is an emerging strategy some health systems use to offset the challenges brought by these requirements. Namely, health systems report that white bagging hinders their ability to ensure medication safety and efficacy and brings logistical challenges in coordinating with external pharmacies.

This resource will help you understand what clear bagging is, why this strategy is needed now, and whether this is an idea you should pursue. We also profile how two early adopters are applying clear bagging at their organizations.
