The Long-Term Care Leader’s Guide to the Covid-19 Vaccine

    The Covid-19 pandemic is still raging in communities and healthcare facilities across the world, with cases in America continuing to hit grim new milestones. Long-term care facilities faced their worst peak of new cases and deaths during December 2020—and expect to see those numbers climb in January. There is reason for hope, however. There are now two approved vaccines in the first phase of distribution, and more vaccines currently in clinical trials.

    Long-term care facilities are first in line for the vaccine. Long-term care staff are some of the most important frontline workers, protecting a vulnerable, at-risk population from the deadly virus; they are essential in fighting the pandemic and sustaining capacity to care for residents. With the CDC’s Pharmacy Partnership for Long-Term Care Program, long-term care facilities across America have rolled out vaccination clinics for facility staff and residents in coordination with CVS, Walgreens, and other regional pharmacies.

    But the hard work has just begun. Nationwide, many staff are skeptical of the vaccine and hesitant to take it. Some states have seen majorities of long-term care staff decline the vaccine when it has been offered. Leaders have a critical role in educating frontline staff regarding the safety and importance of the vaccine, which will be integral to the goal of reducing spread of the virus and protecting staff and residents.
