The Healthgrades Patient Safety Excellence Award is based on an analysis of inpatient Medicare Provider Analysis and Review (MedPAR) data that measures a hospital's clinical performance across 13 different patient safety indicators (PSIs), which each represent a serious, potentially preventable complication.
To be eligible for the award, hospitals were required to meet certain clinical quality thresholds, have no instances of a foreign object being left behind during a procedure, and report data on at least seven out of eight core PSIs.
The top 10% of evaluated hospitals received the Patient Safety Excellence Award, and this year, 438 hospitals from 40 states were awarded the honor.

According to an analysis from Healthgrades, if all hospitals in the United States had performed as well as the winners of the Patient Safety Excellence Award, 100,819 patient safety events could have been avoided between 2022 and 2024.
Healthgrades also found that patients treated in award-winning facilities were significantly less likely to experience the four most common PSIs, which represent a serious, preventable complication and account for 78% of all safety events. These include:
"The data behind this year's Patient Safety Excellence Award highlights how measurable improvements in safety can prevent thousands of complications," said Alana Biggers, medical advisor at Healthgrades. "Hospitals that prioritize evidence-based safety practices not only achieve better clinical outcomes, but also cultivate a culture where patients come first. These insights give individuals and families the information they need to make confident and better-informed healthcare decisions."
