Around the nation: Michael Jordan donates $10M to open 2 new medical clinics in North Carolina

Novant Health on Monday announced that former NBA basketball player Michael Jordan has donated $10 million to the health system to open two new medical clinics in New Hanover County, in today's bite-sized hospital and health industry news from the District of Columbia, New York, and North Carolina.

  • District of Columbia: The Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee announced that it will hold a confirmation hearing next week on California Attorney General Xavier Becerra's (D) nomination for HHS Secretary. Becerra previously served in the House of Representatives (Cole, CNN, 2/16).
  • New York: New York AG Letitia James (D) on Tuesday filed a lawsuit against Amazon on behaf of the state, alleging the company failed to provide adequate safety protections from the novel coronavirus for workers at two facilities in New York City. The lawsuit also claims that Amazon "took swift retaliatory action" against workers who raised concerns about their conditions in relation to the novel coronavirus, according to the New York Times. "Amazon's extreme profits and exponential growth rate came at the expense of the lives, health, and safety of its frontline workers," James argues in the complaint. Kelly Nantel, a spokesperson for Amazon, said the company doesn't believe the lawsuit "presents an accurate picture of Amazon's industry-leading response to the [epidemic]" (Weise, New York Times, 2/16).
  • North CarolinaNovant Health on Monday announced that former NBA basketball player Michael Jordan has donated $10 million to the health system to open two new medical clinics in New Hanover County. Jordan previously partnered with Novant to open two Michael Jordan Family Clinics in Charlotte, which have seen more than 4,500 patients, according to the health system. "I am very proud to once again partner with Novant Health to expand the Family Clinic model to bring better access to critical medical services in my hometown," Jordan said (Ellison, Becker's Hospital CFO Report, 2/15).
