Around the nation: Sen. Lindsey Graham reports breakthrough infection

South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham (R) announced he tested positive for the coronavirus despite being vaccinated, in today's bite-sized hospital and health industry news from the District of Columbia and Florida.

  • District of Columbia: South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham (R) on Monday announced he had tested positive for the coronavirus despite being fully vaccinated. According to Graham, he is currently experiencing "mild symptoms." He added, "I am very glad I was vaccinated because without vaccination I am certain I would not feel as well as I do now." At a briefing on Monday, White House press secretary Jen Psaki said the White House wished Graham a "speedy recovery" after his diagnosis. She also emphasized that "very single piece of available evidence shows that breakthrough infections are rare and mild."(Foran et al., CNN, 8/2)
  • District of Columbia: The U.S. Census Bureau announced last week that it would not release its 2020 American Community Survey (ACS) due to how the coronavirus pandemic skewed the survey's results. The ACS is an annual survey that collects detailed demographic, social, and economic information and is used in research and federal funding decisions. During the pandemic, responses to the survey predominantly came from wealthier, more educated individuals, and the Census Bureau could not account for the data with statistical adjustments alone, according to Donna Daily, chief of the bureau's ACS office. An "experimental" dataset containing less information will be released in place of the ACS. Daily said the agency plans to release a more detailed report on the problems in the ACS data and how to address them in October. (Macagnone, Roll Call, 7/29)
  • Florida: The state on Sunday reported 10,207 Covid-19 hospitalizations, according to data sent to HHS—surpassing its previous record of 10,170 on July 23, 2020. According to the Associated Press, Florida currently has the most Covid-19 hospitalizations per capita in the United States. In addition, the state earlier recorded 21,683 new confirmed coronavirus cases—its highest daily number since the beginning of the pandemic, according to CDC data. Currently, only around 50% of the state is fully vaccinated, per data from Johns Hopkins University. (Vakil, The Hill, 8/1; Schneider, Associated Press, 8/1)
