As cancer screening and treatment improve, the population of US cancer survivors is growing—with estimates exceeding 20 million survivors by 2026. While most programs are developing survivorship treatment summaries and care plans to meet the Commission on Cancer requirements, they also need to develop programs to effectively meet survivors’ vast and diverse needs.
- Defining survivorship. A variety of survivorship models, market demands, and patient needs make it difficult to define your vision for survivorship.
- Insufficient reimbursement. Outside of clinical visits, survivorship services are often not reimbursable. To justify investment, you need to demonstrate survivorship’s value in multiple ways—from patient outcomes to quality of life to downstream revenue. Cancer programs must find innovative ways to secure survivorship funding.
