A changing patient population, largely due to an increase in elderly and mental health presentations, requires resources beyond what emergency departments have traditionally had. The challenge of treating an increasing number of geriatric patients was acutely felt at the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust. They put several components in place to meet the needs of their elderly patients, including a specialised pathway for the frail elderly.
