Four ways transformational pharmacy leaders set themselves apart—and how you can too

Insights from the 2017 Pharmacy Executive Forum National Meeting

At the 2017 Pharmacy Executive Forum National Meeting, we devoted a session to discussing what differentiates transformational pharmacy leaders from traditional pharmacy leaders. We defined transformational leaders as those who have demonstrated pharmacy's value to the health system, who are involved in their health systems' larger strategic planning efforts, and who deploy pharmacy's expertise to advance overall health system goals.

During the meeting, we talked extensively about what these transformational leaders do. Very often, they are taking on initiatives that fall outside of pharmacy's traditional scope, such as reducing unwarranted prescribing variation, improving revenue cycle operations, and reducing spending on employee health benefits.

Equally important is how these leaders approach these challenges. Below, we've summarized four key lessons we've learned from them.
