Hospital cost accounting systems (CAS) support cost reduction, consumer-focused pricing, clinical and operational quality improvement, intelligent capital allocation and budgeting, and contract evaluation and negotiation. The majority of U.S. hospitals have a CAS, but most of these systems are not up to par because of inaccurate cost information and unwillingness to invest by leadership.

There are many factors that hospital CIOs must consider to ensure a high-performing CAS. They must educate themselves in methods and technologies that drive CAS performance, identify vendor solutions, work with CAS design and configuration experts, and partner with hospital CFOS to build a business case for CAS acquisition.
