Around the nation: AMA sets parameters for agentic AI

The American Medical Association (AMA) released a new governance framework to ensure agentic AI is used safely and effectively in healthcare, in today's bite-sized hospital and health industry news from the District of Columbia, Illinois, and Maryland.

  • District of Columbia: According to HHS Chief Counselor Chris Klomp, around 1.1 million Medicare beneficiaries have signed up for discounted GLP-1 medications through CMS' Bridge model. The model originally launched July 1 and allows eligible Medicare Part D beneficiaries to access GLP-1 medications for $50 per month. "That's material savings," Klomp said. "If you were paying $900, now you're paying $50. That's big." In late August and early September, CVS Health and Walgreens reported that they had dispensed more than 100,000 GLP-1 prescriptions through the Bridge program since it launched. CMS is also planning to share monthly utilization reports with Part D plans in the fall so insurers can better understand their members' participation in the program. • Illinois:  AMA has released a new governance framework to ensure agentic AI is used safely and effectively in healthcare. According to Healthcare Dive, the new framework is based on the principle that agentic AI solutions must be backed by evidence and maintain high-quality performance if they are used for clinical functions. AMA included four questions for assessing agentic AI: What clinical function is the AI performing? What evidence demonstrates it can perform the function, and what happens if it fails? What should the AI be permitted to do, and under what conditions? Who is responsible for the risks and outcomes associated with the AI? "As AI capabilities advance, evidence, authority, oversight, and accountability must remain aligned in service of better patient care," AMA wrote in the framework. This guidance comes as more healthcare organizations are implementing agentic AI tools. In a recent survey of 250 healthcare leaders, around 28% said their organization had already deployed agentic AI tools, and 44% said they were conducting pilots or proof-of-concept projects. However, 72% of respondents said agentic AI tools were occasionally implemented without IT approval, showing a gap in supervision. Without proper oversight, healthcare leaders could face potential compliance or regulatory violations. (Vaidya, Healthcare Dive, 10/15)
  • Maryland: FDA recently finalized a rule allowing food manufacturers to use salt substitutes in dozens of standardized foods, including bread, sour cream, and cheese, while still selling the products under their traditional names. The rule, which aims to help reduce sodium in the U.S. food supply, goes into effect Dec. 14 and will apply to 139 food standards. Under the rule, manufacturers are allowed to replace some or all added salt in a product with a "safe and suitable" substitute. According to FDA, qualifying ingredients must reduce sodium and perform the same functions as salt in a product. "This update provides dairy manufacturers with additional flexibility to reduce sodium while maintaining product quality, safety, and consumer expectations," said Michael Dykes, president and CEO of the International Dairy Foods Association.
