Around the nation: PhRMA names new president and CEO

PhRMA has named Eric Cantor, a former Republican House leader, as its new president and CEO, in today's bite-sized hospital and health industry news from California, the District of Columbia, Nevada, New York, and Pennsylvania.

  • California/Nevada: SCAN Health Plan and Costco are launching their co-branded Medicare Advantage (MA) plans in California and Nevada in 2027. The plans will be available in 17 counties in California and two counties in Nevada on Jan. 1. "Entering Medicare Advantage is a natural extension of our commitment to delivering quality and value for our members," said Richard Stephens, SVP of pharmacy at Costco. The new plans also include SCAN's Health Action Reward Program, which allows members to complete health-oriented activities and earn up to $130 that can be redeemed at Costco and other participating retailers. Aside from Costco, SCAN has also announced co-branded plan partnerships with Walmart and The Springs Living. (Casolo, Becker's Hospital Review, 10/2)
  • District of Columbia: PhRMA has named Eric Cantor as its new president and CEO. Cantor previously was a Republican U.S. Representative from 2000 to 2014 and served as House majority leader from 2011 to 2014. Since leaving Congress, Cantor has been vice chair and managing director at investment bank Moelis & Company. He succeeds Steve Ubl, who has led PhRMA since 2015. In April, Ubl announced his plans to step down from the organization at the end of 2026. In its announcement about Cantor's appointment, PhRMA said he brings "decades of experience at the intersection of business and public policy to lead the organization at a pivotal moment for America's biopharmaceutical industry." Separately, Merck CEO and PhRMA board chair Rob Davis said that Cantor "is well respected among policy leaders in Washington and around the world, with a long track record of working effectively across the political spectrum to achieve important outcomes that have a lasting impact." • Pennsylvania/New York: The United States is currently experiencing the most measles cases since 1991, with almost 3,900 reported cases. Pennsylvania has seen the highest number of measles cases so far this year, recently surpassing 1,000 cases. The outbreak in Pennsylvania currently involves 1,004 cases, 198 hospitalizations, and six deaths. New York is also experiencing a growing measles outbreak, with 108 cases reported as of Oct. 3. In response to the outbreak, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) declared a statewide disaster emergency, which will be in effect through Nov. 4. The declaration gives health officials expanded authority to respond to the outbreak, including allowing more medical professionals to administer the measles vaccine. According to health experts, these measles outbreaks are likely due to low vaccination rates. In New York, most of the measles cases have been in rural communities with low vaccination rates.
