TIME: The 7 'most influential rising stars' in healthcare

TIME on Wednesday released its annual "TIME100 Next" list, which recognizes "the most influential rising stars" in various industries and includes several people who made impacts in healthcare.

About the list

The TIME100 Next list, which was launched in 2019, was created "with the belief that the nature of influence was changing," understanding that "influence can now come early and, when it does, through channels that work outside the establishment."

This year, individuals were recognized in five different categories:

  • Artists
  • Phenoms
  • Advocates
  • Leaders
  • Innovators

The healthcare leaders on the TIME100 Next

The TIME100 Next list includes several individuals, listed in alphabetical order below, who have impacted healthcare:

  • Max Jaderberg, who co-founded Isomorphic Labs after working for years to pioneer deep learning and reinforcement learning AI models at Google DeepMind. The goal of Isomorphic Labs is to use AI models to "solve all diseases," with a specific focus on developing AI-supported drugs.
  • Sen. Andy Kim (D-N.J.), who has focused his legislative agenda on senior care, childcare, and affordable housing and unveiled a plan over the summer to enroll every child in Medicaid.
  • Wawira Njiru, who runs the Kenya-based nonprofit Food 4 Education, which coordinates with thousands of employees, hundreds of kitchens, farmers, technology, and distribution to deliver over 600,000 meals to children each day across 1,500 schools.
  • Mathilde Poyet & Mathieu Groussin, scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology who founded the Global Microbiome Conservancy to collect and preserve gut microbes from remote communities in 2016. Since then, they have built a collection preserving tens of thousands of bacteria from around the world as a resource for future generations.
  • Claudia Queragama, an Indigenous Emberá Katío leader from Columbia who earlier this year helped spearhead the first law in Latin America to eradicate female genital mutilation.
  • Marie-Roseline Darnycka Belizaire, who is working with the World Health Organization (WHO) to combat the current Ebola epidemic in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. She is negotiating secure access for WHO and its partners to trace contacts, carry out safe and dignified burials, and vaccinate those most at risk.
  • Isidora Uribe Silva, a Chilean teenager with cerebral palsy who founded Fundación Encuentra Tu Lugar (translated as "Find Your Place") to help people with disabilities thrive in education, employment, and community life.
