Around the nation: FDA approves first new sunscreen ingredient in decades

FDA recently added bemotrizinol to the list of permitted active ingredients in sunscreens, marking the first new addition to the list in over 20 years, in today's bite-sized hospital and health industry news from Indiana, Maryland, and Massachusetts.

  • Indiana: Eli Lilly reported that its oral GLP-1 drug Foundayo outperformed oral semaglutide for blood sugar control and weight loss for adults with Type 2 diabetes. In the trial, patients who took Foundayo achieved an average A1C reduction of 2.2% compared to 1.4% for patients who took oral semaglutide. Patients on Foundayo also lost an average of 19.7 pounds compared to 11 pounds for those on oral semaglutide. The company also reported results from two other clinical trials, which showed that Foundayo helped decrease patients' A1C more than dapaglifozin and a placebo added to insulin glargine. According to Lilly, it plans to submit Foundayo for FDA approval as a treatment for Type 2 diabetes by the end of the second quarter. (Jeffries, Becker's Hospital Review, 6/9)
  • Maryland: FDA recently added a new ingredient to the permitted list of active ingredients in sunscreens for the first time in over 20 years. The ingredient, bemotrizinol, protects ultraviolet A and B rays and has low absorption levels through the skin into the body. FDA originally proposed adding bemotrizinol in December, writing that studies submitted about the ingredient showed that repeated exposure "did not cause irritation or elicit a sensitization, photo-allergenic, or phototoxicity response." In a news release, HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said the agency was "advancing innovation" in the sunscreen market by adding bemotrizinol as an ingredient. "Bemotrizinol has been used safely in Europe for decades, and FDA's action will increase competition and consumer confidence in sunscreen products," Kennedy said. Separately, Mike Davis, acting director of FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, said FDA is "committed to ensuring the American consumer has access to the most effective and safe therapies, including over-the-counter products like sunscreens." • Rhode Island: CVS Health has named Maynd Jolly as its new SVP and CFO of healthcare delivery. Before joining CVS, Jolly was CFO and SVP client executive of growth and partnerships for enGen, a subsidiary of Highmark Health. He also served as CFO of finance and commercialization for enGen. Before that, Jolly was the global head of finance for digital oncology and multidisciplinary oncology partnerships at Siemens Healthineers. (Scheetz, Becker's Hospital Review, 6/9)
