Around the nation: US tops 2K measles cases already this year

According to new CDC data, there have been over 2,000 measles cases in the United States so far this year, and the outbreak continues to grow, in today's bite-sized hospital and health industry news from Arkansas, Georgia, New York, and Ohio.

  • Arkansas/New York: Teladoc Health will now offer its virtual care services through Walmart's Better Care Services platform. Customers can now access Teladoc's services through insured and cash-pay options, including 24/7 virtual urgent care, dermatology consultations, and nutrition counseling. Prescriptions can also be sent to Walmart pharmacies, with same-day delivery available in many areas. "Walmart is where millions of Americans already go for everyday needs, and now, getting care from Teladoc Health can be part of that same experience," said Kelly Bliss, president of U.S. Group Health at Teladoc. "By removing friction and meeting people where they are, virtual care becomes something people choose first, not just something they can access." According to Becker's Health IT, the new collaboration helps expand Walmart's virtual care offerings. In January, the company launched mental health services from BetterHelp on its virtual care platform. (Diaz, Becker's Health IT, 5/28; Global Newswire, 5/28)
  • Georgia: According to new CDC data, there have been over 2,000 measles cases in the United States so far this year, and the outbreak continues to grow. As of June 4, there have been 2,030 confirmed measles cases reported across 40 jurisdictions, with an additional 10 cases reported among international visitors. Of the cases, 93% are associated with outbreaks, including 30 new outbreaks reported in 2026. Currently, the 2026 case count for measles is expected to surpass the 2025 count. In 2025, there were a total of 2,288 confirmed measles cases across 45 jurisdictions and 48 different outbreaks. Before 2025, the number of U.S. measles cases was much lower, ranging from 49 to 285. According to CDC, areas of unvaccinated populations can sustain outbreaks even in states where coverage is otherwise high. Over the last few years, the measles, mumps, and rubella vaccination rate among U.S. kindergartners has declined from 95.2% in 2019-2020 to 92.5% in 2024-2025. A 95% threshold is needed to ensure community immunity against measles, and the decreased vaccination rate has left an estimated 286,000 kindergartners at risk. • Ohio: Cedarville University has partnered with Walgreens to create a new career and internship pathway for pharmacy students. Under the partnership, Walgreens will prioritize Cedarville pharmacy students for any career and internship opportunities. Walgreens employees will also receive tuition discounts for graduate programs at the school, as well as preferred admission benefits for the school's PharmD program. According to Cedarville, its pharmacy school has an 80% residency placement rate, compared to the national average of roughly 60%. This is not the first partnership between a university and a retail pharmacy company. Previously, Duquesne University and CVS Pharmacy launched a tuition program to help CVS employees pursue a PharmD degree. Through the partnership, CVS employees can receive a 50% tuition scholarship for Duquesne's online PharmD program, which aims to address the national pharmacist shortage, particularly in underserved areas.
