Around the nation: OpenAI launches ChatGPT for Clinicians

OpenAI has launched ChatGPT for Clinicians, a new version of its AI chatbot designed to support clinical tasks like medical research and documentation, in today's bite-sized hospital and health industry news from California, Kentucky, and Massachusetts.

  • California: OpenAI has launched ChatGPT for Clinicians, a new version of its AI chatbot designed to support clinical tasks like medical research and documentation. The chatbot will be free for any verified physician, NP, physician assistant, or pharmacist, with the rollout beginning in the United States. According to Open AI, the AI models for the new chatbot were tested by hundreds of physician advisors, who used it for almost 7,000 conversations on clinical care, documentation, and research. Overall, the doctors rated 99.6% of responses as safe and accurate. Alongside the new chatbot, OpenAI also launched HealthBench Professional, an open benchmark for evaluating large language models on clinical tasks. The new benchmarking tool uses "physician-authored conversations and rubrics, multi-stage physician adjudication, and careful data filtering to measure performance and safety in common clinician chats," the company said. In recent months, OpenAI has expanded its presence in the healthcare space with several new health-related products, including ChatGPT for Healthcare and ChatGPT Health. Currently, several major hospitals and health systems, including Boston Children's Hospital, AdventHealth, and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, have adopted ChatGPT for Healthcare. • Kentucky: Humana's pharmacy business CenterWell is collaborating with Mark Cuban's Cost Plus Drug Co. for a new employer-based program. CenterWell will use SwitfyRx, Cost Plus Drug's digital pharmacy software-as-a-service solution, for medication order intake. The platform will allow CenterWell to offer home delivery pharmacy services for eligible workforce in the Humana Associate Benefit Plan. The organizations will also utilize Cost Plus Drug's pricing model and CenterWell's distribution strategies to help increase access and reduce costs for patients. "Everyone should be able to get safe, affordable medication," said Cuban, cofounder of Cost Plus Drugs. "This collaboration gives Cost Plus Drugs the chance to support more consumers. We’re working with CenterWell Pharmacy because we trust the team and like what they're doing in trying to improve prescription affordability." • Massachusetts: Thermo Fisher Scientific has agreed to sell its microbiology business to Astorg, a European private equity firm, for roughly $1.075 billion. Thermo Fisher's microbiology business provides antimicrobial susceptibility testing and culture media solutions for clinical, pharmaceutical, and food safety testing and generated $645 million in revenue last year. The unit currently has around 2,400 employees and operates around 13 manufacturing and research and development sites worldwide. According to Thermo Fisher, it expects the sale to be completed in the second half of the year. Astorg specializes in healthcare, technology, and businesses services investments and currently has over $28 billion in assets under management. In recent years, it has continued to push into healthcare. In late 2024, Astorg acquired reproductive health company Cook Medical and merged it with Hamilton Thorne to create a combined company called Nexpring Health, which launched in 2025.
