The 53 most innovative companies in healthcare

Fortune last week released its fourth annual list of "America's Most Innovative Companies," with 53 healthcare companies making the list — including 22 Advisory Board members.

Methodology

To create the list, Fortune partnered with Statista to evaluate companies on three dimensions of innovation:

  • Product innovation, which includes the introduction of new products or services and regular improvement of existing products and services
  • Process innovation, which refers to the development and use of new and innovative technologies/production processes, as well as innovative use of digitalization
  • Innovation culture, which measures the extent that a company fosters a spirit of entrepreneurship and creativity among its employees

Each dimension accounted for a third of a company's score, which ranged from 0 to 100. To determine each company's score, Statista conducted several surveys to collect both internal and external views on a company's innovation. Roughly 34,000 employees and over 3,000 experts participated in surveys for the list.

Statista also evaluated the strength of a company's patent portfolio based on the Patent Asset Index, which considers technology relevance and market coverage to determine competitive impact. Patent data was provided by LexisNexis Intellectual Property Solutions.

A total of 300 companies from 17 industries and 36 U.S. states were included on the list. The industries with the most innovative companies were technology, financials, and healthcare.
