Around the nation: Microsoft partners with health systems on AI best practices

Microsoft and 16 health systems have launched a new stakeholder group focused on developing best practices for artificial intelligence (AI), in today's bite-sized hospital and health industry news from the District of Columbia, Illinois, and Washington.

  • District of Columbia: In a letter addressed to House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.), over 50 stakeholders, including providers, associations, and technology companies, called for Congress to extend CMS' Acute Hospital Care at Home waiver program. The program is slated to expire at the end of the year, but the letter requested that it be extended for at least another five years. According to the stakeholders, extending the waiver program would allow home-based services "to be developed equitably across populations everywhere" by increasing hospital capacity without raising costs for health systems. Organizations that signed the letter include the American Medical Association, GE Healthcare, and Advocate Health. CMS is currently gathering comments about the hospital-at-home program and will make recommendations about the future of the waiver program to Congress this fall. • Illinois: CDC has sent a team of experts to Chicago to help local public health officials manage an ongoing measles outbreak. According to the Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH), these are the city's first measles cases since 2019. So far, the city has identified five measles cases. CDC's team will work closely with both the city and state health departments to identify people at risk, provide clinical guidance, and more. "The majority of Chicagoans are vaccinated against measles and therefore are not at high risk but we are strongly urging those who aren't vaccinated to do so as soon as possible, new arrivals and all Chicagoans," said CDPH Commissioner Olusimbo Ige. "It is by far the best protection against measles, which for the first time in years is in our city." (Christensen, CNN, 3/11; Bendix, NBC News, 3/11)
  • Washington: Microsoft has partnered with 16 health systems to launch a stakeholder group dedicated to developing guardrails for AI. The consortium, which is called the Trustworthy & Responsible AI Safety Network (TRAIN), includes Johns Hopkins Medicine, Mass General Brigham, MedStar Health, and Advocate Health. Aside from health systems, Microsoft also plans to partner with the nonprofit community health data network OCHIN and the revenue cycle management company TruBridge. The AI group will share best practices, develop a process for providers to register AI in clinical settings, and offer tools to measure outcomes associated with the technology. According to David Rhew, global CMO and VP for healthcare at Microsoft, TRAIN is meant to complement existing AI stakeholder groups, such as the Coalition for Health AI.
