Cheat sheets: Learn how top hospital quality ratings programs work

Methodology

To create its "World's Best Specialized Hospitals" list, Newsweek and Statista surveyed over 40,000 medical professionals in more than 20 countries about hospitals in 11 different specialties, including:

  • Cardiology
  • Cardiac surgery
  • Oncology
  • Endocrinology
  • Neurology
  • Neurosurgery
  • Orthopedics
  • Gastroenterology
  • Pulmonology
  • Pediatrics
  • Urology (new this year)

Survey recommendations made up 92.5% of a hospital's score, while accreditations/certifications made up 5%, and surveys of patient reported outcome measures made up 2.5%. Overall, Newsweek ranked the top 300 hospitals for cardiology and oncology, the top 200 hospitals for pediatrics, the top 150 hospitals for cardiac surgery and endocrinology, and the top 125 hospitals for each remaining specialty.

For its "World's Best Smart Hospitals" list, Newsweek and Statista conducted an international survey of hospital managers and health care professionals who were knowledgeable of smart hospitals, as well as an international survey of a hospital's implementation and use of digital technology, which was validated by chief digital/information officers or senior management.

The digital technologies considered in the surveys include:

  • Electronic functionalities
  • Telemedicine
  • Digital imaging
  • Artificial intelligence
  • Robotics

Every nominated hospital was reviewed through a quality assurance process via desk review. Hospitals were scored based on their national recommendations (45%), international recommendations (50%), and the international hospital survey (5%). Newsweek ranked the top 300 smart hospitals from 28 different countries.
