Around the nation: CDC downgrades its Covid-19 threat level for cruises

CDC on Thursday said that despite lowering its Covid-19 threat level for unvaccinated passengers on cruises from "very high" to "high," it still recommends unvaccinated people "avoid travel on cruise ships," in today's bite-sized hospital and health industry news from the District of Columbia, Georgia, and Michigan.

  • District of Columbia: Mayor Muriel Bowser (D) on Saturday announced that any D.C. residents 12 and older who receive their first dose of a Covid-19 vaccine at the R.I.S.E Demonstration Center, Anacostia High School, or Ron Brown College Preparatory High School will receive a $51 gift card, through July 17. Those who get vaccinated at Anacostia High School will also be eligible to win two round-trip tickets to any American Airlines destination, Bowser said (Brice-Saddler, Washington Post, 6/18).
  • Georgia: CDC on Thursday lowered its Covid-19 threat level for unvaccinated passengers on cruises from "very high" to "high." However, the agency said it still recommends unvaccinated people "avoid travel on cruise ships, including river cruises, worldwide." Caitlin Shockey, a spokesperson for CDC, said the guidance was issued "[i]n preparation for the restart of cruise ships" and was "based on modeling estimates" (Kelleher, Forbes, 6/17; Hines, USA Today, 6/17).
  • Michigan: Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D) on Thursday announced that Michigan will lift its indoor capacity restrictions and mask requirements as of June 21. As of Thursday, about 60% of Michiganders age 16 and older have received at least one dose of a Covid-19 vaccine. "Today is a day that we have all been looking forward to, as we can safely get back to normal day-to-day activities and put this pandemic behind us," Whitmer said (Eggert/Householder, Associated Press, 6/17).
