Jim Kane is a senior director and faculty member with The Advisory Board Company’s Talent Development division. He has been with the company since 2004 and delivered over 700 workshops and research presentations at leading hospitals, health systems, and professional organizations across the United States. In addition to teaching, he provides guidance to executive teams on curriculum planning, accountability for learning application, and leadership culture. He works with a diverse range of constituencies – including executive, physician, nursing and frontline audiences – to build leadership capacity and advance organizational objectives.
Jim has extensive clinical, management, and teaching experience. His areas of background include critical care and emergency/trauma nursing as well as all realms of psychiatric emergency response services. He is board-certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center as a Nursing Executive, Advanced and is licensed as a clinical nurse specialist in California.
Prior to joining the Advisory Board in 2004, Jim held many advanced clinical, management and senior level leadership positions including administrative director of nursing at Scripps Mercy Hospital in San Diego, Calif. While at Scripps, he established a system-wide 24/7 psychiatric liaison service to enhance behavioral health care in non-behavioral health settings. Besides authoring and co-editing the book Touched by a Nurse: Special Moments that Transform Lives, he has traveled numerous times throughout impoverished areas of Mexico as part of an outreach surgical team.
Jim received his bachelor of science from State University of New York at Stony Brook and masters of nursing in psychiatric mental health from the University of California Los Angeles.
He resides in San Diego with his family, including his two huge Maine Coon cats who “allow him to share their home.” Jim enjoys spending time with his twin niece and nephew as well as all things California, including the ocean, painting, biking, and gardening.
