About Craig

Craig Pirner is a Managing Director with The Advisory Board Company's Talent Development division.

The Advisory Board Company is a global research, consulting, and technology firm serving 3,000+ hospitals and health systems in the United States, Europe, and Australasia. The firm's Talent Development division partners with health institutions to build skilled leaders with the perspective, analytic acumen, and self-awareness needed to drive meaningful health system improvement. Formed in 2001, the Talent Development division has invested $20 million-plus USD and over 200,000 research hours in the development of its extensive curriculum. Collectively, the Talent Development division has educated nearly 70,000 health care leaders throughout the world.

In his role as Managing Director, Mr. Pirner leads the entire faculty of the division. He also maintains an extensive teaching calendar of his own. Since joining the firm in 2005, Mr. Pirner has presented over 700 individual workshops at over 200 institutions in the United States, Australia, and the United Kingdom. Several thousand health leaders have attended his presentations.

Mr. Pirner's instructional work includes facilitation of topic-specific workshops, leadership of executive retreats, debriefs of 360-degree assessments, and significant advisory work on the role of leadership development in organizational performance. Mr. Pirner works with health system executives, administrators, nurses, and physicians. Mr. Pirner also teaches in the Advisory Board Fellowship, a case study-intensive, cohort-based program for the accelerated preparation of executive mindset in high-potential hospital leaders.

Additionally, Mr. Pirner often presents to groups associated with the Advisory Board's other research and membership programs. In this capacity, he delivers keynote addresses to members of the Advisory Board's Employee and Physician Engagement Initiatives and various Technology Collaboratives. He is also one of the lead faculty members for the "Doctors at the Helm" national conferences that have been presented in the United States and Australia.

Outside of his work with the Advisory Board, Mr. Pirner has reviewed submissions for the "Narrative Matters" section of Health Affairs, the Policy Journal of the Health Sphere, in which authors a health policy issue through the lens of a personal narrative/essay. He also is involved in public service initiatives in Washington, D.C., where he lives.

Prior to joining the Advisory Board, Mr. Pirner was Assistant Director of Undergraduate Admissions at Washington University in St. Louis and a public speaking instructor for the University's Career Center. He received his AB, summa cum laude, from Washington University in St. Louis, with triple majors in music, political science, and educational studies. He was twice awarded the Antoinette Dames prize for outstanding achievement.
