Around the nation: Washington State University fired 5 football coaches for remaining unvaccinated

The university announced that its head football coach and four assistant coaches were fired for not complying with the state's Covid-19 vaccine mandate, in today's bite-sized hospital and health industry news from Minnesota, Rhode Island, and Washington.

  • Minnesota: Gov. Tim Walz (D) on Monday announced that Minnesotans between the ages of 12 and 17 who receive their first Covid-19 vaccine dose between now and Nov. 9, and who also receive their second dose by Nov. 30, will be eligible to receive a $200 Visa gift card through the "Kids Deserve a Shot" program. In addition, any teenager who gets fully vaccinated in 2021 will be eligible to be placed in a drawing for a $100,000 scholarship to any public or private nonprofit institution in the state. (Choi, The Hill, 10/18)
  • Rhode Island: CVS Health on Monday announced that Joneigh Khaldun will assume the role of VP and chief health equity officer. Khaldun—who was named earlier this year to President Joe Biden's task force for health and social inequities related to Covid-19—will focus on delivering culturally competent care and advancing health equity for patients, members, providers, customers, and communities. (Gooch, Becker's Hospital Review, 10/18)
  • Washington: Washington State University (WSU) on Monday announced that head football coach Nick Rolovich, along with four assistant coaches, was fired for not complying with the state's Covid-19 vaccine mandate. Marty Dickinson, WSU Board of Regents chair, said, "Experience is showing that vaccine mandates help motivate people to complete the vaccination process." He added, "WSU has worked diligently to ensure the health and safety of our students, facility, staff and communities, as seen in our outstanding vaccination rates." (Reyes, Axios, 10/18)
