Around the nation: FDA just released new rules for opioid prescribing

The new rules, which apply to transmucosal immediate-release fentanyl (TIRF) drugs, state that providers should prescribe TIRF drugs only to opioid-tolerant patients and require prescribers to document and verify the patient's opioid tolerance, in today's bite-sized hospital and health industry news from Maryland, New York, and Virginia.

  • Maryland: FDA recently issued new rules for prescribing transmucosal immediate-release fentanyl (TIRF) drugs, which now state that providers should prescribe TIRF drugs only to opioid-tolerant patients and require prescribers to document and verify the patient's opioid tolerance. The rules also require TIRF prescribers to use a new patient registry that will help prescribers monitor for misuse, overdoses, substance use disorders, and accidental exposure related to TIRF drugs (Anderson, Becker's Hospital Review, 12/28/20; FDA release, 12/23/20).
  • New York: Northwell Health has launched an app that provides medical education and teaching-skill resources for students, medical trainees, and faculty. The app, called Just In Time Teaching Tools, utilizes a teaching model known as the Just-in-time model, which allows instructors to have close interactions with their classrooms and students to engage with instructors for teaching tips. According to a release, the app contains "[c]linically specific teaching techniques" for "content related to internal and family medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, surgery psychiatry, and neurology," as well as some sub-specialties (Drees, Becker's Health IT, 12/29/20; Northwell release, 12/22/20).
  • Virginia: Inova Health System recently announced that it is planning to invest $1 billion into creating a new medical campus located in Alexandria, which will feature and expand upon the relocated Inova Alexandria Hospital. Inova said it expects the campus to employ 2,000 health care providers and include a medical office building with around 50 physicians (Paavola, Becker's Hospital Review, 12/23/20; Inova release, 12/22/20).
