Architectural Design Showcase: December 2020

The 35th installment of the Daily Briefing's Architectural Design Showcase features seven examples of sustainable design in health care facilities.

Boulder Associates

Boulder Associates: The BCH Community Medical Center MOB in Lafayette, CO supports an eye clinic and an ambulatory surgery center for ocular surgeries. Designed by Boulder Associates, the facility showcases emerging vacuum-insulated glass technology which can improve occupant comfort by reducing thermal transmittance and convection at windows. BWBR

BWBR: Creating a healthy building was a baseline for success of the BWBR-designed Hennepin Healthcare Clinic and Specialty Center. Sunlit staircases, material choices, open space, and a pocket park that incorporates a downtown residential neighborhood were all strategies that incorporated the desires and health needs of staff, patients, and community and earned the facility LEED® Gold certification. ERDMAN

ERDMAN: As Southern California's first LEED Gold MOB over 120,000SF, the Providence Facey Mission Hills Clinic focuses on sustainability to diminish its impact on environmental and community resources. Flad Architects

Flad Architects: UF Health's specialty tower has achieved four Green Globes, making it the first hospital in the U.S. to earn that designation. Notable features of the Flad Architects-designed facility include native and adaptive landscaping, access to natural daylight, water savings, sustainable materials, and environmentally sensitive lighting design. JE Dunn Construction

JE Dunn Construction: JE Dunn completed construction on the Sarah Cannon Cancer Hospital on Medical City Plano’s campus. From locally sourced products to state-of-the-art mechanical systems, this project minimizes its carbon footprint and improves the interior environment for patients and staff. Twenty-six percent more energy efficient than the energy code, the facility also saves 678,000 gallons of water annually through landscaping, irrigation and plumbing. Thanks to extensive off-site prefabrication and application of lean principles, over 880,000 pounds of construction waste were diverted from the landfill for recycling and reuse. LEO A DALY

LEO A DALY: The LEO A DALY-designed Omaha VA Ambulatory Care Center creates a healing environment that integrates places of respite, views of nature and maximizes natural daylight. Sustainable features include circadian lighting, desiccant wheel technology to control temperature and humidity in the ORs, and healing gardens. (© 2020 LEO A DALY)

ZGF

ZGF: The LEED Gold Certified OHSU Center for Health & Healing Building 2 sets high standards for sustainability in health care. The use of chilled beams is a first for any health care project in Oregon, requirement advancements in building codes and paving the way for future health care projects to employ the same cost-saving technology. Designed by ZGF, the facility taps into efficiencies via shared programming with the adjacent Rood Family Pavilion, with both facilities utilizing a centralized energy plant to reduce waste and functioning in concert with an existing bioreactor that provides access to reclaimed water (© 2018 Bruce Damonte)
