The combination of the Covid-19 pandemic, the resulting economic downturn, and new and preexisting margin constraints are putting a spotlight on the most expensive assets for providers—their facilities. In a recent Advisory Board survey, 95% of strategic planners reported they were more likely to engage in extreme cost cutting measures including facility rationalization due to Covid-19. But shifting the physical footprint is often easier said than done for health systems.
