Around the nation: Oregon regulators approve Amazon-One Medical deal

The Oregon Health Authority (OHA) last week approved Amazon's $3.9 billion deal to acquire One Medical, in today's bite-sized hospital and health industry news from the District of Columbia, Louisiana, and Oregon.

  • District of Columbia: HHS sent a 14-member National Disaster Medical System (NDMS) team to the University of New Mexico's (UNM) Children's Hospital to assist staff amid a surge of pediatric respiratory infections, including influenza and respiratory syncytial virus. "The arrival of the NDMS team couldn't come at a better time," said Anna Duran, associate CMO of the UNM Children's Hospital. "Our staff have been working very hard to provide the highest level of care to the sickest children in our state. But our staff are tired, many of them missed the holidays with their families, and they desperately need this help." Last month, HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra said states and health care providers can rely on regulatory flexibilities available during the Covid-19 public health emergency and HHS resources, including NDMS teams, to help respond to other illnesses placing a strain on hospitals and health care systems. • Louisiana: LCMC Health on Tuesday announced the acquisition of three HCA Healthcare-owned hospitals across southeast Louisiana. The $150 million deal, which is pending approval by state regulators, includes Tulane Medical Center, Tulane Lakeside Hospital, and Lakeview Regional Medical Center. According to a news release, the roughly 1,900 employees at the facilities will retain their jobs, while gaining access to "new and expanded opportunities for growth and advancement." In addition, LCMC agreed to invest $220 million in the facilities over five years. (Hudson, Modern Healthcare, 1/3)
  • Oregon: OHA last week approved Amazon's $3.9 billion deal to acquire One Medical after it determined the transaction would likely have no impact on access and cost for Oregon residents. In addition, OHA ruled out a more in-depth review since One Medical only operates five primary care clinics and serves very few patients across the state. While the transaction has been approved by the OHA, the companies have not yet received approval from the Federal Trade Commission, which is currently reviewing the deal. If the acquisition is completed, the OHA will conduct a follow-up analysis within five years to assess whether the deal influenced quality, access, affordability, and equity. Amazon and One Medical would also be required to provide the state with reports every six months outlining the services they offer, their patient population, and any changes executed in corporate governance.
