Around the nation: Walmart Health to open 16 clinics in Florida by fall 2023

Walmart Health plans to open 16 health centers in Florida by fall 2023 "to increase access to quality health care" across the state, in today's bite-sized hospital and health industry news from California, Florida, and Missouri.

  • California: Clorox has issued a voluntarily recall of roughly 37 million bottles of scented Pine-Sol over concerns that the cleaning products may contain bacteria that can result in serious infections in individuals who have weakened immune systems. According to a Clorox spokesperson, Pine-Sol's research and development team detected bacteria during a "routine product review." The bacteria, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which is found in soil and water, was identified in "certain recalled products," the spokesperson added. While Pseudomonas aeruginosa is not dangerous to most people, Clorox said that individuals who use external medical devices or have compromised immune systems may face a heightened risk of infection. So far, Clorox has not received any reports of illness or injury from the recalled products. The company said it has issued the recall "in an abundance of caution." (Chung, New York Times, 10/26)
  • Florida: Walmart Health on Wednesday announced plans to open 16 health care clinics in the Jacksonville, Orlando, and Tampa areas by fall 2023—a move that will significantly increase its presence across the state. The clinics, which will be located next to Walmart Supercenters, will provide primary care, labs, X-rays, behavioral health, dental health, and community health services seven days a week. According to the company, almost half of appointments made at Walmart Health clinics in the last year were for primary and chronic condition care. "As the population in Florida continues to grow at more than double the rate of the rest of the United States, so does the need to increase access to quality health care," said David Carmouche, Walmart's SVP of omnichannel care offerings. • Missouri: Centene on Tuesday announced that it will enter a contract with Cigna's Express Scripts to manage $40 billion in pharmacy spending in 2024—a move that comes after Centene last October announced that it was looking for a new pharmacy benefit manager (PBM). "We're feeling good about moving forward with the core services and ability to expand the relationship if that makes sense," said Centene CEO Sarah London. According to Centene CFO Drew Asher, Express Scripts will cover a portion of the costs from CVS Health's Caremark, which currently manages most of its pharmacy services. The companies have not disclosed the length of the contract or its economic terms. (Tepper, Modern Healthcare, 10/25)
