Four steps to increase medical assistant (MA) productivity and retention

Overview

Expanding the medical assistant’s (MA’s) role is a top priority in care team redesign. Advance your organization’s approach to deploying and managing MAs to improve care team productivity and MA retention.

Step one: Scope the MA role

Clearly define deployment models to maximize top-of-license practice and balance workload. Well-designed MA roles can simultaneously increase care team productivity and decrease MA turnover.

Step two: Train MAs on new skills

Determine the training model that’s best for your organization based on your resources and number of MAs employed. Start by outsourcing training to a local school and then build an in-house program as you hire more MAs.

Step three: Regularly assess performance

Run an initial skills assessment when MAs are first hired to set a baseline. After training is complete, sign off on MA competencies before they join the care team, and evaluate performance on an ongoing basis.

Step four: Invest in professional development opportunities

To reduce turnover, provide opportunities for MAs outside of their standard clinical practice. Invest in supplemental training for advanced care team roles and build a dedicated career ladder for MAs.
