In 2007, the Joint Commission mandated accredited hospitals to provide an ongoing, continuous evaluation of physicians on a more frequent basis. This process, called the Ongoing Professional Practice Evaluation (OPPE), includes the evaluation of physicians' professional practices including positive and negative trends in quality of care, and aids in determining the status of privileges.
