APIs and the App Ecosystem

Most people are familiar with the concept of apps from the smartphone world, but apps are a broader phenomenon than the mobile and consumer market. Most major platform vendors, including electronic health record (EHR) and enterprise resource planning (ERP) vendors, are aggressively investing in building active app ecosystems backed by a mature application programming interface (API) infrastructure.

From a health system’s perspective, these new models are an evolutionary step aimed at delivering value faster, better, and cheaper than traditional heavyweight applications or customizations on top of all-in-one suites.

This report discusses how apps help address health care challenges, the role of APIs, and additional strategic considerations for health systems and app developers.
