Men make up nearly 50% of the total population, but spend approximately 25% less—over $1,000 per person less—on health care annually than women.
This is not because men need less care than women. In fact, men face a number of unique health issues (e.g., prostate cancer, erectile dysfunction), as well as an elevated risk for certain conditions, such as heart attacks. In addition, nearly 50% of men have at least one chronic condition, such as diabetes or heart disease, further complicating their health. But men tend to not seek out the care they need for two reasons: 1) a perceived lack of value in seeking care, and 2) societal gender norms.
To bridge this utilization gap, providers have begun to develop clinical "man caves": dedicated health programs geared toward men. By combining a male-friendly ambiance, innovative marketing strategies, and seamless care delivery, these programs can both improve male health outcomes and drive business to the health system.
