CMS conducts audits on an estimated 1 in 20 providers—both eligible professionals and eligible providers participating in meaningful use (MU).
While CMS shares information regarding audit mechanisms and provides some pointers on the types of documentation to retain, providers remain uncertain about how they should prepare for MU audits. That's why we conducted interviews with 13 health systems around the country to understand how they prepared.
This report identifies different types of audits a provider may encounter, summarizes interviewees’ experiences with MU audits, describes how they developed audit documentation, and identifies successful practices providers can adopt to better prepare for an audit.
