Artificial Emotional Intelligence

Artificial emotional intelligence (AEI), also known as emotions analytics or affective computing, uses software to analyze a human's verbal and non-verbal communication and determine the person’s emotional or psychological state.

While the field of text analytics has seen increased adoption and can offer a general view of how people feel along a positive/negative spectrum (i.e., sentiment analysis), technologies for analyzing facial expressions, tone of voice, or body language have been more elusive. Through the use of AEI, health care providers (and smart machines) can adapt to human emotion and behavior and better serve, monitor, and treat patients.

This report provides an overview of AEI, highlights two vendor profiles, and shows a number of existing AEI applications for medical research and patient care.
