If you have questions about the submission process, please email us at or review the FAQs at the bottom of this page. If you’re not yet sure about participating, we encourage you to explore the unique features of the Performance Benchmark Generator.

The Philanthropy Performance Benchmark Generator is an interactive tool for health care development leaders to assess performance relative to peer organizations and the industry writ large. The Generator has been updated to include FY2018 data. It also now features: 1) the ability to toggle between FY16, FY17, and FY18 data for most metrics, 2) the addition of 3-year rolling averages for most metrics, and 3) the addition of 3-year trendlines for most metrics.

Benchmarks include:

Production: Total dollars raised, average gift size, total value of five
largest gifts
Efficiency: Return on investment, cost-to-raise-a-dollar
Staffing: FTE levels by role type, ratio of frontline to non-frontline FTEs, funds raised per FTE
Impact: Philanthropy impact on hospital net margin, total philanthropic spending

Participants in the 2019 Philanthropy Performance Benchmarking Survey can view their own performance data in the benchmark generator and create “apples to apples” comparisons of their development team’s performance against a custom cohort of peers.
