Observations from the 2017 Pharmacy Leadership Survey

National-level insight into pharmacy leader’s roles and responsibilities.

Early this year, we asked pharmacy executives to participate in our 2017 Pharmacy Leadership Survey. Their responses provide national-level insight into the vast scope of pharmacy leader responsibilities.

Here are the highlights:

  • Organizations are increasingly creating dedicated, system-level pharmacy leadership roles with purview over the entire pharmacy enterprise
    • 50% of organizations surveyed have created a dedicated, system-level pharmacy leadership role, but the scope and role of these individuals may vary by title
  • Executive-level system leaders have significantly fewer direct reports than director-level leaders
    • 70% more direct reports on average for those with director role compared to executive role at the system level
  • Pharmacy executives reporting to the C-suite are better positioned to advance system-level, strategic goals
    • 54% of system-level leaders currently directly report to a system SVP or VP
  • Organizations investing in value-based care transformation may find value in a dedicated system-level leader to oversee the pharmacy enterprise
    • 79% of organizations with dedicated, system-level leaders have committed resources to population health compared to 33% of organizations without a dedicated, system-level leader
