A guide to financial conversations for cancer centers

Talking to patients about the costs of care can be extremely challenging for cancer center staff. This guide provides scripting examples to help staff discuss patient benefits, out-of-pocket cost estimates, development of payment plans, and point-of-service collections.

To start off, we compiled some general tips for patient interactions:

  • Introduce yourself and your role within the cancer program
  • Be prepared with all the necessary patient information
  • Have the conversation in a private area
  • Communicate clearly and provide complete information
  • Be compassionate and armed with possible solutions
  • Be willing to reschedule if the patient is visibly distressed
