Moral distress can occur when a clinician knows the ethically right thing to do, but institutional constraints make it nearly impossible to pursue the right course of action. Front line nurses often experience moral distress when they feel unable to provide high quality, safe care to patients because of staffing or other organizational barriers. If unaddressed, moral distress can undermine resilience, leading to nurse burnout and turnover.
In this session, Cynda Hylton Rushton, Professor of Clinical Ethics, discussed how Johns Hopkins University used an education model to decrease moral distress among front line nurses.
