The good news—and challenges—in the 2018 eCQM and MU proposals

On April 28, 2017, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released the 2018 Inpatient Prospective Payment System (IPPS) proposed rule. The rule brings good news for participants in both the Inpatient Quality Reporting (IQR) program and the EHR Incentive Programs (i.e., meaningful use [MU]), such as a shortened reporting period and reduced number of electronic Clinical Quality Measures (eCQMs) in 2017 and 2018.

However, amidst all these welcome changes, challenges continue for many providers. For example, providers may still lack access to 2015 Edition certified EHR technology (CEHRT) in order to implement it for use in calendar year (CY) 2018. With all these policies, it is critical for providers to submit public comment and make their voices heard.
