The Comprehensive Care for Joint Replacement (CJR) model is a five-year mandatory bundled payment program for care related to lower extremity joint replacement (LEJR) care.
Better known as total hip or knee arthroplasty (THA/TKA), LEJRs are among the most common inpatient procedures for Medicare beneficiaries. The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation orchestrates the CJR model, which began the five-year performance period on April 1, 2016 for nearly 800 hospitals in 67 designated markets.
In November 2017, CMS announced that participation would only be mandatory for 34 of the 67 markets, while hospitals in the other 33 markets can voluntarily opt-in.
