Hospitals' next ED planning goal: Building a proactive emergency care network

As facility designers, are you frustrated that many well-designed EDs fall prey to overcrowding and wait times so interminable that patients start to feel like they are stuck in a Twilight Zone episode? So are your provider partners.

Our 2017 provider survey helped us understand what hospitals want from emergency space planning. Hospitals’ number one operational challenge in emergency departments (EDs) is “bottlenecking at discharge or admission” with “not enough space” at a close second. These challenges indicate that EDs are routinely overcrowded and, more importantly, that hospitals are actively seeking out creative design and construction solutions.
