Clare Panniker, chief executive at Basildon & Thurrock NHS Foundation Trust

Basildon & Thurrock NHS Foundation Trust was in serious trouble when Clare Panniker took over as chief executive in September 2012. By July 2013, the organisation entered Special Measures (an organisational improvement regime in the UK) along with 11 other NHS foundation trusts.

It wouldn’t stay there long. Less than a year later, Basildon & Thurrock became the first of those trusts to graduate from the program.

We asked the chief executive about leading Basildon & Thurrock through significant change and scrutiny, and about how she balances the tension between innovation and risk in today's turbulent health care environment.
